Founding Principles

In late 2001 the Bronx River Working Group formed the Bronx River Alliance as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. At that time, a set of objectives were laid out to guide the Alliance's work and our relationship to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The Alliance will provide a coordinated voice for the river as well as the structure and process through which to grow and sustain this important work. More.

Over the same time period, the Executive Team developed a set of values and an environmental justice implementation strategy that continue to inform our work today.

Since the early 1900s, low-income and communities of color along the River's southern reaches have received the fewest resources to reclaim, restore and redevelop what is the most polluted and ecologically abused portions of Bronx River and its watershed.

Therefore, the Alliance will seek to link, both ecologically and socially, the northern and southern parts of the River. Moreover, the Alliance will address environmental justice and community empowerment, through commitments to public participation, principles of sustainability, transparency and self-determination, the centerpiece of its mission and operating principles. More.

The Bronx River Alliance is committed to practicing and upholding the values of inclusion, collaboration, environmental justice, responsiveness, communication, ecological restoration, innovation, respect, integrity and public access. More.
