Bronx River Ramble: Missing Link 2 - Fleetwood to Bronxville
Fleetwood Metro-North station
Bronx River Ramble: Missing Link, 2 Fleetwood to Bronxville
10AM to 1PM
Meet at Fleetwood Metro-North startion (Harlem Line)
Save the date for the second Ramble of a three-part series: Missing Links. The Ramble will pick up where the first Missing Links tour left off, searching out and exploring still more disconnected Bronx River Pathway links while learning interesting facts about the local history and ecology of the neighborhoods surrounding the river.
On this tour we will visit a nineteenth century suburban development founded on patent medicines, learn of a onetime artist colony with a curious link to Custer’s Last Stand, and see where a youthful future president first learned his ballroom dance steps.
Tour: Meeting at Fleetwod Station on the Metro North Harlem Line, we’ll head north to Bronxville. We’ll connect with Laurel Brook, a Bronx River tributary, and follow it into Scout Field, a Westchester County park that lies along the Bronx River. Continuing north from Scout Field, we’ll examine another disconnected River pathway just before we reach Bronxville. At Bronxville we’ll come to Palmer Road, the beginning of the continuous River Pathway that runs all the way up to Scarsdale, and the scene of some of the most notorious regular flooding of the Bronx River.
Details: The tour meets at 10AM on Saturday, May 19th at Fleetwood Station on the Metro North Harlem Line (hourly service from Fordham and other Bronx stations; see www.mta.info for current schedules.) The tour will end at Bronxville Station (one stop up from Fleetwood) from where we can board the train home. The tour is free and requires no reservations. It will take about 2½ hours, so wear comfortable walking shoes, bring snacks and water, and beware of the possibility of encountering a bit of mud along the way.
