Bronx River Ramble: White Plains, Bronx River Battleground
White Plains Metro North Harlem Line railroad station

Explore the Bronx River’s strategic and tactical role in the October 1776 battle of White Plains. See what Alexander Hamilton saw from the historic vista atop Chatterton Hill, enjoy a scenic walk along the river amid oxbows, tributaries, and freshwater marshes, and see evidence of how both people and nature have shaped the river’s course. Plus the “earthworks” built in our present-day battle against erosion and pollution of the Bronx River. We’ll also visit the scene of a Bronx River legend, and find out how the river gave White Plains its curious name.

Join tour leader Stephen Paul DeVillo at the entrance of the White Plains Metro North Station at Hamilton Avenue (where the taxi line is.) We’ll head up the river and take the train home from the White Plains North station. The walk is free and needs no reservations, and will take about two hours (wear comfortable shoes!) Metro North has hourly weekend service to White Plains from both directions; check for current schedules.
