The North American river otter has officially returned to the Bronx River, captured on a motion camera in June by Bronx Zoo scientist RJ Hawkins. It marks the first documented sighting of the species in New York City’s only freshwater river since the early 1900s.
“Knowing this may be the first documented river otter in the Bronx in generations was an incredible moment,” Hawkins noted. “It shows why long-term wildlife monitoring and environmental restoration efforts matter.”
The discovery stands as a major victory for an urban waterway that faced intense pressure during the city’s growth. Industrial activity, untreated runoff, and overhunting once drove native aquatic species out entirely.
The otter’s return reflects decades of community care and environmental advocacy. Guided by the Clean Water Act and led by dedicated groups like the Bronx River Alliance alongside public and private partners, ongoing restoration efforts have steadily strengthened the river’s ecosystem. The momentum has been building: native beavers made a historic return in 2007 after a two-century absence, oysters are thriving once again, and now a key aquatic mammal has returned to the local food web.
While a single sighting does not mean a permanent population is fully established yet, its presence is a clear, encouraging sign. Otters rely on clean water and a steady supply of fish, meaning the river is in its healthiest state in generations.
“There are moments in conservation that remind us why this work matters, and this is one of them,” said Craig Piper, director of the Bronx Zoo. “Thanks to a broad coalition of public and private partners, we can celebrate the return of an otter as a result of decades of restoration work.”
It is a milestone for local ecology and a proud moment for the Bronx, proving what long-term investment and community stewardship can accomplish.
