The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works with 100+ partners—including NYC Parks—to protect, improve and restore the river so that it is  a healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resource for all communities through which the river flows. Since being founded in 2001, we have engaged over 20,000 volunteers, nearly 25,000 people have paddled with us, we have improved 26 acres of parkland, secured and coordinated over $250M, and created 22 acres of new parkland.

Starting Salary Range:  $50,000 – $55,000 (salary commensurate with experience)

Position Overview: 

The Alliance seeks a Recreation Coordinator to organize and lead canoe trips and other active recreation along the Bronx River (walks, bike rides, etc.) The Alliance offers guided canoe tours to local residents so they can discover the Bronx River, its natural wonders, and the unique urban paddling experience. The Alliance is looking for a motivated self-starter to organize the necessary logistics and lead on-water trips, including safety and tour presentations. The Alliance will help the Recreation Coordinator obtain canoe training and certification. The Recreation Coordinator will:  

  • Lead safe, educational and fun canoe trips prioritizing serving environmental justice communities
  • Organize and collaborate with staff and community groups on walks, bike rides, exercise programs and runs 
  • Hire and supervise a seasonal Recreation Assistant
  • Maintain a fleet of canoes, kayaks, and other related equipment
  • Perform administrative duties related to the program, including reporting and record keeping
  • Create and post content for newsletters, websites, social media platforms, etc.
  • Collaborate with the development team on funding, grants, campaigns, special events, etc.
  • Maintain the Alliance’s recreation webpages, including event registration pages 
  • Follow and update the tour scripts and safety protocols 
  • Lead the logistics of our annual paddling fundraiser, the Amazing Bronx River Flotilla 
  • Recruit and train river guides to assist with canoe trips in collaboration with the outreach team
  • Organize canoe training for Alliance staff and volunteers
  • Perform related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor
  • Center diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA); community leadership; and environmental justice

Work Schedule: Full Time (35 hours/week): 

  • Offseason (Dec – March): Mondays – Fridays 
  • Peak recreation season (April – November): Wednesdays – Sundays

To Note:

  • The Alliance works in with partnership with NYC Parks and community stakeholders
  • Lower Westchester and Bronx residency preferred 
  • This position reports to the Director of Programs
  • The Alliance offers medical, dental and vision insurance; SIMPLE IRA with up to 3% match, pre-tax FSA and transit benefits; 13 Paid Holidays; and 3 weeks paid vacation, sick days, and personal days
  • The reporting location is Bronx River House, located at 1490 Sheridan Boulevard. 


  • 2-3 years professional experience related to duties above; one year of work experience at the Bronx River Alliance can substitute for two years of experience
  • Strong communication skills, ability to connect with diverse populations in the Bronx and speaking clearly and compellingly to small groups (20 people) 
  • Mastery of basic canoe skills and an enthusiasm to learn more; experience running or assisting an on-water recreation program preferred
  • Ability to lift over 75 lbs.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license required; trailer driving experience preferred
  • Attention to detail and competent maintainer of systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, a plus but not required proficiency in Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc), GIS, SalesForce, and online applications
  • Curiosity, quick learner, particularly regarding river-related topics 
  • Strong swimmer
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Love of the outdoors!
  • Canoeing certification (preferred) (training provided)
  • First Aid and CPR certification (preferred) (training provided)
  • Bilingual (Spanish or other language spoken by Bronx communities) Speaker (preferred)
  • Background in education, environmental science, and/or recreation (preferred)
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
