Ecology Intern

The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works in harmonious partnership to protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor so that it can be a healthy ecological, recreational, educational and economic resource for the communities through which the river flows.

The Bronx River Alliance is seeking a part-time Ecology Intern. They will support the Ecology Coordinator in managing ecology programming along the Bronx River. The primary role of this internship will be to work alongside the Alliance ecologist to assist with the collection and processing of water quality, microplastic, and floatable waste data gathered by volunteers, Alliance staff, and our partner organizations. Other activities include helping lead volunteer programs and events and assisting the Alliance Conservation Crew with ecological restoration activities along the Bronx River. 

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assist Ecology staff with tasks related to:
    • Project WASTE, our trash collection and assessment program
      • Lead in-field events with BxRA staff and volunteers
      • Data entry, management, and analysis
    • Microplastics collection and analysis
    • Project Water DROP, our main water quality monitoring program
      • Water quality monitoring, including field and laboratory sampling and data analysis
      • Outreach to community stakeholders on water quality and other river-related issues
    • Biotic integrity testing, including fish and macroinvertebrates surveys
  • Maintaining the air quality sensors at River House and monitoring their outputs
  • Create social media and newsletter posts with up-to-date information
  • Assist Conservation Crew in fieldwork to manage invasives, restore native plant species, and install/maintain raingardens along the Bronx River

QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL SKILLS/AREAS OF INTEREST 

  • An undergraduate degree or currently enrolled in a degree program
  • Experience with data collection (water quality, wildlife, trash assessments, etc.) and analysis
  • Experience with laboratory work and protocols; IDEXX is preferred
  • Experience working outdoors; experience teaching outdoors is preferred
  • Interest in addressing water quality pollutants affecting the Bronx River
  • Interest in community outreach and engagement
  • Ability to multitask, keep track of details, and work independently
  • Ecology/Natural resources degree or coursework required
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to walk over uneven ground, wade in the river, carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment, and work outside in all weather conditions

PREFERRED SKILLS 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
  • Familiarity with social media applications and e-communication methods

HOURS 

  • Part-time, approximately 14-21 hours/week
  • Scheduling is flexible and may require some occasional weekend and evening hours
  • Internship to start as soon as possible for the summer/fall season
