We are seeking an Education Assistant to support the delivery of educational programming on the Bronx River and promote the Bronx River as an educational resource for schools and community organizations.Â
The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works with 100+ partners—particularly NYC Parks—to ensure that the river corridor will be a healthy ecological, recreational, educational and economic resource for the communities through which the river flows.

Starting Salary Range: $36,000-$41,000/yr
Schedule: This is a full-time (35 hours/week) position set to begin on March 6th, 2023.
- The Education Assistant will typically work Monday-Friday. Due to the seasonal nature
of the position, there will be periods with required Saturday work. - Work hours are 9AM – 5PM.
- Occasional evenings and weekends are required
Position Overview:
The primary responsibilities of the Education Assistant will be supporting the delivery of educational programming on the Bronx River and promoting the Bronx River as an educational resource for schools and community organizations. The primary responsibility of the Education Assistant is leading and providing administrative support for our existing field trip offerings, and designing new educational experiences for youth in the Bronx River watershed, with a particular focus on environmental justice (EJ) communities. The assistant will aid in the facilitation of our EELS (Environmental Education and Leadership for Students) research internship, as well as support the launch of our BOBCATS (Building Better Careers and Training) skilled trades internship.
The Education Assistant will:
- Teach and co-teach our outdoor field trips for K-12 students.
- Supervise high school interns as they work in the field and the classroom.
- Share knowledge of the Bronx River, its history, and ecology through verbal
presentations and social media posts. - Support major events at the Bronx River Alliance, including the Amazing Bronx River Flotilla in the spring and An Upstream Soiree in the fall.
- Assist with the administrative tasks within the Education program.
To note:
- Lower Westchester or Bronx residency preferred.
- This position reports to the Education Coordinator.
- The main reporting location is Bronx River House, located at 1490 Sheridan Boulevard.
- This is an in-person position.
- The Education Assistant should have a passion for nature, leading tours and working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including hot/cold temperatures and rain.
Job Responsibilities:
- Learn and follow the protocols to assist and lead our in-person field trips such as Project
WASTE, Water Quality Monitoring, Bronx River forest hikes, and birdwatching and be
able to deliver them to groups of up to 30-35 students. - Guide, alongside the Education Coordinator and science research mentors, the EELS
interns in their field work. - Support the delivery of our BOBCATS (Building Better Careers and Training) internship.
- Monitor the Education Program calendar and help with collection and delivery of materials such as waivers and post-trip feedback surveys.
- Understand and convey the history and current challenges of the Bronx River and its surrounding communities.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Bronx River House Classroom.
- Be reliable, communicative, enthusiastic, and committed to youth development
(particularly in EJ communities). present, flexible, and ready to assist with programming.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Passion for the mission, vision and values of the Bronx River Alliance.
- Must be a recent graduate of a college or university majoring in environmental science,
urban studies, biology, conservation, or related majors OR a high school graduate/GED
with at least 4 years of relevant work experience. - Familiarity with Google apps such as Google Docs and Google Sheets.
- Familiarity with the Bronx River and natural areas in New York City.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to speak and write
about a variety of topics including local history, river ecology, urban development, and
environmental justice. - Ability to travel to communities along the Bronx River including the South Bronx,
Northeast Bronx, and Mount Vernon. - Curiosity, quick learner, particularly regarding river-related topics
- A driver’s license is preferred but not required.
- Proficiency in Spanish (written and oral) is preferred but not required
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 25lbs.
