The Bronx River Alliance Seeks An Executive Director!

The Bronx River Alliance, bronxriver.org, an independent non-profit organization founded in 2001, seeks an Executive Director to lead its work to protect, restore, and improve the Bronx River as an environmental, social, and economic resource for the communities along its banks. The Alliance works in close partnership with local communities and with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (“Parks”) in developing, managing, and programming the Bronx River Greenway and over 400 acres of parkland along it.

Bronx River Alliance Mission and Value Statement:The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works in harmonious partnership to protect, improve and restore the Bronx River corridor and greenway so that they can be healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resources for the communities through which the river flows. Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Foster programmatic excellence and innovation, including educational and volunteer activities that engage community members and take full advantage of new opportunities, including in the River House.
  • Lead and supervise Alliance staff to carry out and implement the goals and objectives of the Alliance.
  • Manage all aspects of the non-profit corporation, including overseeing staff, complying with not-for-profit corporate governance, fundraising, and reporting to the Alliance Board of Directors and Parks.
  • Cultivate and grow a vibrant array of partnerships with groups and organizations active on the river.
  • Work closely with the Parks Bronx Borough Commissioner and the Bronx River Park Administrator to integrate the work of Alliance staff and Parks employees.
  • Manage day-to-day operations and the maintenance of River House in Starlight Park, the Headquarters of the Alliance and coordinate with the Bronx River Park Administrator.
  • With the Bronx Borough Commissioner and Bronx River Park Administrator, coordinate capital funding requests with elected officials including the City Council and Borough President.
  • In consultation with NYC Parks, raise capital and program funding from philanthropic and government sources for ecological restoration, park development and greenway projects in partnership with city, state, and federal governmental agencies, and steward them through project development and implementation. Raise and manage additional funds from private sources.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to open space, ecological restoration, community outreach, environmental education, environmental justice, and working with low-income communities, especially in the Bronx.
  • Strong managerial skills, including ability to lead a racially and culturally diverse staff. A minimum of 5 years of management experience, including overseeing staff, projects and finances.
  • Proven ability to build partnerships with local communities, community-based organizations, non-profits, businesses, and public agencies.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and five years of full-time progressively responsible experience in one or more of the following: development and leadership of organizations based in historically marginalized communities; policy formulation and implementation addressing issues of sustainability, environmental justice, racial equity, environmental restoration, or related areas. Experience must include a minimum of four years in a responsible administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity in government agencies and/or nonprofit organizations; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to above. However, all candidates must have at least four years of responsible administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.

Additional Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in non-profit management, environmental studies, urban planning, natural sciences or a related field.
  • Strong writing, communication, presentation, listening, and negotiation skills.

  • Successful track record in fundraising from a range of philanthropic and public sector resources.

  • Valid New York State driver license.

Salary Range: $120,000 – $140,000 per year (commensurate with experience)

To note:

  • This is not a remote position and requires workdays spent in the Bronx office and in the field. Consistent with Bronx River Alliance personnel policy, up to two days per week of work from home may be permitted.
  • Occasional night and weekend work is required.
  • The Alliance offers medical, dental and vision insurance; 401K with up to 3% match, pre-tax FSA and transit benefits; 13 paid holidays; and paid vacation, sick, and personal days
  • This position reports to the Bronx River Alliance Board of Directors

  • The reporting location is Bronx River House, located at 1490 Sheridan Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10459
