Starlight Park Ribbon-Cutting Grand Opening
Join Bronx River Alliance, and a plenty of local leaders, elected officials, governmental agencies, a few eels, ducks, geese, and other aquatic creatures - for the official Ribbon-Cutting Grand Opening of the newest Bronx River Greenway Park: Starlight Park!!
NOTE: UPDATED START TIME!! EVENT WILL BE AT 10:30AM (not 11 as previously announced)
Special Add-On: Right after the official ribbon-cutting, join the Bronx River Alliance for a short bicycle tour of the park. The ride will be very easy non-strenuous, just over one mile, showing off the various features of Starlight Park. The Alliance has a very limited supply of bikes to loan out. The park bike tour is a "meeting on the go" supported by a citywide initiative, The Partnership for a Healthier New York City, funded through a Community Transformation Grant (CTG) received by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Bronx Health REACH/Institute for Family Health is the borough lead organization for the Partnership in the Bronx. Please visit and learn more at www.HealthierNYC.org.
Today Starlight Park is 13 acres with just over a half-mile of walk-bike path. It extends from 177th Street to below 174th Street - see basic Starlight Park map here. Enter the park at 177th (at Devoe), 174th (ramps off the bridge) or the north end of Edgewater Road (by the Sheridan Expressway onramp.) For transit and parking directions, see this flier.
Starlight Park is already open (it opened quietly in January) - but there are more great features coming in the future. Additional water and bathrooms will be installed shortly, expected in 2014. Bronx River Alliance will have our new headquarters in a beatiful new ecologically-friendly River House building at Starlight, expected in 2015. And, if that wasn't enough, there's also a planned Starlight Park phase 2 that needs your help. Phase 2 features additional parkland, and three new bridges to connect the greenway east to 172nd Street and south to Westchester Avenue. Help get Starlight's phase 2 built!
