Bronx River Ramble: Shoelace Park and Bronx River Parkway
Entrance at the #2 Subway Station, Gun Hill Road and White Plains Road

Join us and Stephen DeVillo ramble along a bypassed section of the roadbed of the original 1925 Bronx River Parkway through Shoelace Park and hear about the curious history of how the Parkway came about. We’ll also learn about how Robert Moses transformed the Parkway in the 1950s, leaving behind an abandoned mile and a half section that eventually became Shoelace Park.

We’ll explore how the Parkway was intended to save the Bronx River, and the roadway’s impact on the communities it passed through, as well as the efforts underway today to transform Shoelace into a true community-designed park. And just how did “Gun Hill Road” get such a name?

This free tour requires no reservations.

See Stephen DeVillo on BronxNet TV discuss the Bronx River Ramble on June 10th. Interview starts at 26:32. Check it out here!

Metro North Railroad to Williams Bridge Station and walk east to White Plains Road.

Stephen Paul DeVillo is the author of The Bronx River in History and Folklore, available in bookstores, from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and from the History Press
