Bronx River Ramble - Tuckahoe Marble
Tuckahoe - Crestwood Metro-North station

Saturday, August 11 - 10AM
Meet at Crestwood Metro-North station on the northbound platform

This Ramble will dig up the story of a lost Bronx River industry – the quarrying of Tuckahoe Marble that for over 100 years built some of New York’s finest public buildings. Join tour guide and Bronx River rockhound Stephen Paul DeVillo for a look at the remains of these once-mighty quarries, and the traces of the people who worked in them and who shaped the valley’s social history. Starting at Crestwood Station, we’ll head uphill to the quarries, then make our way down the Bronx River, past the “Irish Alps”, “the Hollow”, and the scene of the Bronx River alligator story. We’ll see buildings sculpted of Tuckahoe Marble, learn about the Old Cotton Mill, and walk through an old Bronx River industrial town. Along the way we’ll hear about a colorful array of personalities, including Satchel Paige, Franklin Roosevelt, Norman Rockwell, and Dutch Schultz.

The tour begins at 10AM Saturday, August 11th at the northbound platform of the Crestwood Metro North train station (trains from Fordham at 9:12 and 9:44, trip about 20 minutes) and end up at the Tuckahoe Metro North train station, where we can take the train home. The tour is free and requires no reservations, and will take about two hours, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
