Join historian Terrell L. Armistead in a special tour along the Bronx River at River Park as they share the ecological stories and community histories of the Bronx River. Led in honor of Morgan Powell, a founding member of the Bronx River Restoration and a passionate advocate for the reclamation of the Bronx River. His research has been fundamental in sharing the lesser known histories of Black and Brown Bronxites and their contributions to the eco-cultural history of NYC. You can read more of these histories can be found in detail in his blog called the Bronx Sankofa.

Often much is known about the middle to Africa but less is known of the original “highways” of colonial New York, its rivers! This tour will highlight the importance of the Bronx River to indigenous Americans and its role in both enslavement and freedom for African slaves. We will also discuss the critical role of the river systems to our communities today and how Morgan Powell’s impact continues to outlive him.

Meet-up location: River Park on the corner of 180th and Boston Road.

Note: This is part of a series of Bronx Black History Walking Tours hosted by Terrell Armistead.
