My three weeks as a Wildcat intern with the Bronx River Alliance have been good and very exciting. I learned to identify common weeds such as Japanese Knotweed and Virginia Knotweed (it’s a native counterpart to the invasive Japanese Knotweed). I also learned to identify Poison Ivy. My second week with the crew was great because I got to know more about my work crew and worked on an erosion control project. What I had to do for erosion control was rake soil to smooth it in prep for laying down jute mat. The reason for laying down jute mat is to keep soil from eroding and washing into river, but it still allows water to soak through. I also dug trenches to place coir logs in. These slow down and filter rain water runoff.
