Awards and Recognitions

Over the past decade, the Bronx River has received various awards, honors, and recognitions for the transformation occurring in, along, and around the river corridor.

2017:

On June 13, 2017, the Bronx River Alliance was honored the Valerie Chernow award for “Outstanding HOPE volunteer” by The Hope Program.

On May 23, 2017 in New York City, The Bronx River Alliance was honored recently a “High Impact Results” award by the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program and the Hudson River Estuary for our work on the fish ladder and alewife stocking.

The Bronx River Alliance and NYC Parks received the 2017 “Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award” on February 17,2017 from the National Community Development Association (NCDA). The award recognizes the achievements made in cleaning and restoring the Bronx River. Read more here!

2016: 

On December 7, 2016, the Urban Health Plan at their 42nd Anniversary honored Katie Lamboy, Education Coordinator in the Bronx River Alliance, as an “Everyday Heroes Making a Difference”. She was honored for her tremendous efforts in encouraging students and educators to use the Bronx River as a classroom.

2015:

HBSCNY Award for Providing Strong Community Leadership (May 2015)

2014:

Bronx River Alliance recieves “ACA Stroke of Achievement Award” from the American Canoe Association (July 2014)

Presented the “Partner in a Cleaner New York” from the Keep NYC Beautiful Coalition and the NYC Department of Sanitation (August 2014)

Elaine Feliciano, Conservation Crew Leader, was honored by the NYC Parks Latino Society in their thirten annual “Alma Achievers Awards.” The ceremony celebrated NYC Parks employees of Latino heritage who contribute to the vitality of the agency and to the great work that Elaine does in the Bronx River Aliiance. (October 9, 2014)

2013:

US EPA Region 2 Environmental Quality Award presented to Linda Cox

2012:

National Park Service names the Bronx River as a National Water Trail in recognition of how far we have come in reclaiming the river as a recreational asset.

 

Bronx River cited a “model” for river restoration, exemplifying DOI’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar (May 2012)

Leadership in Action Award presented by the NYC Environmental Law Leadership Institute (NYCELLI) to Linda Cox and John Denne (May 2012)

Paul McGaw Memorial Conservation Award presented by the Native Plant Society of North America to the Bronx River Alliance (October 2012)

2011:

EPA Environmental Quality Award presented to the Bronx River Alliance (April 2011)

Designing the Parks Award presented by the National Parks Service to Concrete Plant Park
(March 2011)

Employer Partnership Award presented by Phipps CDC to the Bronx River Alliance (January 2011)

Honored as an employer of Sustainable South Bronx’s BEST (Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training) graduates (March 2011)

2010:

2008:

Municipal Art Society presents annual award to José the Beaver. Accepted by the Bronx River Alliance on the beaver’s behalf. (July 2008)

2007:

Art Commission Award for Construction of the Bronx River House and adjacent site work

2005:

Certificate of Recognition from Pablo Neruda Academy for Architecture and World Studies (December 2005)

Anne Marie Runfola recognized as “Environmentalist of the Issue” and “Educator of the Month” by the Bronx Council on Environmental Quality (BCEQ) (November 2005)

Bronx Council on Environmental Quality (BCEQ) used the restoration of Concrete Plant as a case study in the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation (August 2005)

Outside the Box Award presented by New York Parks & Trails to the Bronx River Alliance (June 17, 2005)

The Natural Resources Defense Council honored the restoration of the Bronx River as a Green Apple (Earth Day 2005)

New York Metro Chapter of the American Planning Association honored the Bronx River Alliance with a Meritorious Achievement Award (Spring 2005)

2002:

MASterwork Award, the Municipal Art Society’s honors for excellence in urban design, awarded to the Bronx River Alliance for the greenway plan

2001:

Innovations in American Government Award presented to Partnerships for Parks, particularly recognizing their work on the Bronx River

1999:

Waterfront Visionary Award presented to Bronx River Working Group (November 1999)
