Join historian Terrell L. Armistead in a special tour along the Bronx River at St. George’s Crescent as they share the ecological stories and community histories of the Bronx River. Led in honor of Morgan Powell, a founding member of the Bronx River Restoration and a passionate advocate for the reclamation of the Bronx River. His research has been fundamental in sharing the lesser known histories of Black and Brown Bronxites and their contributions to the eco-cultural history of NYC. You can read more of these histories can be found in detail in his blog called the Bronx Sankofa.
To celebrate Black August, and Nat Turner’s Rebellion, once a stop along Morgan’s Powell’s Sankofa Tour, where he once proclaimed “what does it say about us, that Black and Latino’s have been the dominant population of the Bronx for 300 years and not one of us has told the history of the Bronx from start to finish in our own self image? We need to claim where we live!” Visitors will learn the complicated history of Black Revolutionary history, the History of the Negro Fort and participate in claiming and writing that history in a creative workshop. Visitors will also honor Morgan’s memory with libations, celebrations and stories of rebellion.
Meet-up location: St. George’s Crescent
