Join historian Terrell L. Armistead in a special tour along the Bronx River at Van Cortlandt Park as they share the ecological stories and community histories of the Bronx River. Led in honor of Morgan Powell, a founding member of the Bronx River Restoration and a passionate advocate for the reclamation of the Bronx River. His research has been fundamental in sharing the lesser known histories of Black and Brown Bronxites and their contributions to the eco-cultural history of NYC. Once an indigenous settlement, then a colonial estate of the wealthy Van Corlandt family and the oldest private home in the Bronx. We will tour the African / Indigenous burial grounds as well as a pond irrigated by enslaved people. This tour will highlight the importance of the early water systems to colonial New York and to Morgan Powell’s research. Visitors will meet at the manor house. Wear comfortable shoes and park attire.
