For our second week of commemorating Black Changemakers of the Bronx River, we honor the legacy of Annette Williams.
Annette was a Bronx-based organizer, community activist, and ecological professional who spent many years at Sustainable South Bronx, where she ran BEST (Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training) Academy. BEST Academy is a “green collar” training program that connects individuals from the Bronx community with hands-on learning opportunities in the environmental sector and helping them find full-time ecological work upon graduation.
Before her work with Sustainable South Bronx, Annette spent years coordinating cleanups along the Bronx River and worked tirelessly towards creating cleaner, healthier, and more accessible green space for Bronx residents.
Her amazing efforts to help Bronx community members meaningfully connect with the ecological assets of their home borough inspired the restoration of the Bronx River, and continue to inspire the work of the Bronx River Alliance to this day.
