Bronx River Cleanup

view of trash from 233rd

Eight volunteers braved the threat of rain and torrent of mosquitos to work hand in hand with Alliance staff to remove more than 700 lbs of garbage from the bank of the Bronx River near 233rd Street. Removing trash from the banks of the river helps prevent it from going into the river, the Long Island Sound and eventually the ocean. As part of the American Littoral Society’s Beach Cleanup Day, the group not only removed litter, but also tallied what types of trash they encountered. The front runners were (in order of abundance) food wrappers/containers, cup lids/caps, cups/plates, plastic bevarage containers and plastic bags. Interesting finds included a pair of glasses, two bicycles, a full wallet and lots of umbrellas. Many thanks to the volunteers who made this cleanup a success, and to Terrence McAuley and Tom O’Connor from Metro North Railroad for helping to make the cleanup possible. We hope to find creative ways to prevent the future build up of trash adjacent to the 233rd Street bridge and the Woodlawn Metro North platform.
