Bronx River Earth Day of Service

This Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, over 130 post-9/11 veterans reported for duty at the Bronx Forest for a day of parks restoration. The veterans are volunteers with the Mission Continues, a nonprofit organization that empowers veterans who are adjusting to life at home to find purpose through community impact. Working together with Bronx River Alliance and community volunteers, in 3 hours we dredged 1,100 feet of trail; planted 400 trees; removed over 2.5 tons of invasive plant species; and cleaned up the Bronx River by removing 406 plastic bottles, 735 styrofoam cups, 27 tennis balls, 23 glass bottles, and 1 baseball bat from the Bronx River. Special guest, TV personality and veterans’ advocate, Jon Stewart joined us, helping to clean up and restore the Bronx Forest alongside volunteers.
