Pablo Neruda Intern

jomar 1

My name is Jomar Perez and I am a student from Pablo Neruda Academy. My three week internship with the Bronx River Alliance went well. One of the things that I like about my internship was being able work in the field. I also had the chance to work with some awesome people including Penny, Elaine and Mike, the crew leaders. On my first day at the Bronx River Alliance I didn’t know anyone there and no one knew me, but the crew and the office staff tried to make me feel welcome and they succeeded. I would like to thank everyone for giving me the experience. During my internship I mainly work with the crew in the Bronx Forest in Bronx Park. On 4/25/09, I helped Penny with the N.Y Cares Day there. I helped Penny unload the plants and food we needed for almost 80 people that helped in the park that Saturday. I learned about the interesting history of the Bronx River Alliance which started in 1974. The Bronx River Alliance does events that I never thought they do. Most of the events are in the summer. We have been helping to get ready for the Flotilla on May 9th starting at Shoelace Park by cleaning up both the river and the banks. After cleaning up the river and seeing the amount of bottles that were there, I had an Idea. The idea, I shared with Mike, was to take all of the bottles and recycle or use them and make art.
