Wally Arias is an intern from the Phipps Community Development Corporation. For the past few weeks he has been working alongside the Bronx River Alliance Conservation Crew three days a week. We asked Wally to write a brief summary of his experiences with the crew. He expressed the fact that he picked up a few skills working with numerous hand and power tools such as machetes, chainsaws and hedge trimmers. Wally learned how to "take down a tree" including the removal of woody debris from the Bronx River. Wally has acquired the skills to plant and knows how to identify a few native and non-native species. As seen in this picture, Wally also learned how to manage outdoor drainage issues when he assisted in the recent flooding of our nursery.
