On Tuesday, October 22nd students from Pelham Prep Academy (PPA) and Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics (BXCSM) spent the morning at Concrete Plant Park for A Day in the Life of the Bronx River, our contribution to the DEC’s A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor. These 40 students surveyed the Bronx River for macroinvertebrates through dip netting and seining, and they were able to find some Atlantic Menhaden and Mummichogs, along with some Blue and Green Crabs. Students monitored the quality of water in the river, looking at its salinity, dissolved oxygen, density, and turbidity. They gained the opportunity to use real life water quality monitoring tools and data sheets, allowing them to develop questions about their environment and reach scientific conclusions using the data collected. A huge thank you to Patrick Callahan of BXCSM and Zachary Itzkowitz of PPA for bringing their students out to experience the Bronx River, and always inspiring them through the world of scientific inquiry. Overall, this event allowed students to directly see how the Bronx River fits into the larger picture of all New York waterways and how its health can impact the community and wildlife around it.
