NYC Snow Day

Winter Storm Hercules dumped quite a bit of snow on the city last night, and the department of sanitation as well as city park workers have been making sure our city’s streets and paths are clear and safe to drive and walk on. Did you know that the overuse of road salt may have negative environmental impacts? When it dissolves, it increases the levels of sodium and chloride in the water- which can be toxic to aquatic life and impede proper circulation. Plants and vegetation can also be damaged by runoff from salted roads. Many cities are looking into ways to mitigate these impacts and creative alternatives to using salt to keep roads clear and safe.
