The Bronx River Alliance Seeks A Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator!

The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works with 100+ partners — including NYC Parks — to protect, improve and restore the river so that it is a healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resource for all communities through which the river flows. Since being founded in 2001, we have engaged over 20,000 volunteers, nearly 25,000 people have paddled with us, we have improved 26 acres of parkland, secured and coordinated over $250M, and created 22 acres of new parkland.

Pay Rate: $31.21 – $43.71 per hour (commensurate with experience)

Position Overview:

The Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator works in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator, Outreach Manager, and other Alliance staff members in connecting with and growing the community of dedicated volunteers that carry out the Alliance mission, with a focus on environmental justice. The Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator will support developing, maintaining, and growing the volunteer community by engaging volunteers through the Alliance programs: Ecological Restoration and Management, Education, Foodway, Greenway, Outreach, and Recreation. The Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator will:

  • Develop and maintain an engaged community of volunteers
  • Provide meaningful onboarding and training of volunteers
  • Lead volunteer activities, in the field and in the office
  • Support other program coordinators and managers in the planning and organizing of events
  • Enter volunteer data into the Bronx River Alliance’s database
  • Seek feedback from volunteers to improve our programs
  • Perform related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor
  • Center diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA); community leadership; and environmental justice

Work Schedule:

  • Monday – Wednesday, 8am-4pm
  • 21 Hours/Week (Part Time)
  • Occasional night and weekend work may be required for special events

To note:

  • The Alliance works in partnership with NYC Parks and community stakeholders
  • Bronx or Lower Westchester residency preferred
  • This position reports to the Outreach Manager
  • The reporting location is Bronx River House, located at 1490 Sheridan Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10459

Job responsibilities

The Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator will sustain and grow a community of volunteers to assist other Program Coordinators, as well as the Fundraising and Administrative team, in achieving a high level of service and success in our program delivery. Specifically, the Seasonal Volunteer Coordinator will:

  • Create weekly opportunities for volunteer participation (particularly: Monday morning “Pitch In” park cleanup events, as well as opportunities for ecological restoration, community science, mailings, etc.)
  • Administer volunteers’ attendance, waivers, registration and surveys
  • Meet and greet volunteers on site
  • Assist with development of grassroots river/parks volunteer groups
  • Support the maintenance of the volunteer webpage and calendar of events
  • Perform other administrative duties related to the outreach program
  • Maintain communication with volunteers
  • Support the outreach and planning for Bronx River annual events (the Amazing Bronx River Flotilla, Soundview Restoration Day, Community Banquet)

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead outdoor volunteer activities
  • 1-2 years relevant professional experience; one year of volunteer experience at the Bronx River Alliance can substitute for one year of professional experience
  • Passion for the mission, vision and values of the Bronx River Alliance
  • Knowledge of the Bronx River and the environmental justice issues it faces
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to connect with diverse populations in the Bronx (Bilingual preferred; Spanish or other languages spoken by Bronx communities)
  • Curiosity, a quick learner, particularly regarding river-related topics
  • Attention to detail
