The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a plan to protect New York City’s waterfront communities from storm surges that can cause catastrophic flooding.
However, something’s wrong – the Bronx is missing.
The Army Corps’ plan, called “Alternative 3B”, was chosen from a selection of plans. Each alternative looks at the usefulness of constructing protective barriers around New York City, from storm surge gates, to seawalls, to levees and dunes. Each alternative also comes with different price tags and timelines, and the Army Corps chose Alternative 3B as the most effective option for New York City. This plan proposes that many features, including miles of concrete walls, that will be built along various parts of New York City, including along a portion of the Harlem River, but vulnerable Bronx communities such as Hunts Point and Soundview will have no protection from future coastal storms under this plan.
We need your voices! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is receiving public comments until March 31st. We urge you to please send an email to the Army Corps and tell them to protect our vulnerable Bronx communities! Please share with friends and family, and let’s stand up for the Bronx!
