Starting Salary Range:  $50,000 – $60,000

Schedule: This is a full-time, 35 hours per week, in-person position to start as soon as possible. 

• • The Education Associate works: 
    • September through June: Tuesday-Saturday
      (except for mid-December to mid-February) 

• July and August: Monday to Friday 

• Work hours are 9AM – 5PM at 1490 Sheridan Blvd., Bronx NY 10459.
• Occasional evening and additional weekend work is required. 

Position Overview:
The Education Associate supports the Education Coordinator in providing educational programming on the Bronx River and promotes the Bronx River as an educational resource for schools and community organizations. The primary responsibility of the Education Associate is co-leading education programming, including curriculum planning and lessons for the Bronx River EELS internship, field trips to the river, and occasional classroom visits. The Education Associate provides administrative support by drafting written communications, helping to coordinate meetings and site visits, helping design new lessons and curricula, and supporting data entry and tracking program deliverables. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Assist and lead in-person education programming including EELS internship, Water Quality Monitoring, Bronx River Forest hikes, and birdwatching – to groups of up to 35 students (K-12.)
• Guide and supervise, alongside the Education Coordinator and science research mentors, the EELS high school interns in their field work. 
• Draft written communications, support and coordinate meetings and site visits, collaborate on new lessons and curricula, data entry, and tracking program deliverables. 
• Assist with the administrative tasks such as: Monitoring the program calendar, distributing and collecting materials, digital and print, such as waivers and post-trip feedback surveys.
• Understand and convey the social and ecological history of the Bronx. 
• Support major events at the Bronx River Alliance, including Flotilla, Soiree, and others.
• Support with office needs and other program needs as directed.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Bronx River House Classroom.
• Be reliable, communicative, enthusiastic, and committed to youth development – particularly in EJ communities. Present, flexible, and ready to assist with programming.

NOTE:

• Bronx or lower Westchester residency preferred.
• This position reports to the Education Coordinator.
• This is an in-person position based at Bronx River House, located at 1490 Sheridan Boulevard. 
• The Education Associate should have a passion for nature, leading tours and working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including hot/cold temperatures and rain.

Qualifications:

• Passion for the mission, vision and values of the Bronx River Alliance.

• Must be a recent graduate of a college or university majoring in environmental science, urban studies, biology, conservation, or related majors OR be a high school graduate/GED with at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
• Familiarity with Google apps such as Google Docs and Google Sheets.
• Ability to navigate social media platforms for educational outreach.
• Familiarity with the Bronx River and natural areas in New York City.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; including an ability to speak and write about a variety of topics including local history, river ecology, urban development, and environmental justice.
• Curiosity, a quick learner, particularly regarding river-related topics 
• Ability to complete a background check.
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 25lbs.
• Preferred: Proficiency in Spanish, written and oral.
• Preferred: NYS driver’s license.
