The Bronx River Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the river and works with 100+ partners—including NYC Parks—to protect, improve and restore the river so that it is  a healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resource for all communities through which the river flows. Since being founded in 2001, we have engaged over 24,000 volunteers, nearly 27,000 people have paddled with us, we have improved 26 acres of parkland, secured and coordinated over $250M, and created 22 acres of new parkland.

Position Overview: 

The Communications Coordinator brings the Bronx River Alliance’s work to life through compelling storytelling, strategic communications, and creative content. Serving as the primary communications partner to program teams, this role translates programs, organizational priorities, and community impact into stories and communications that engage communities, strengthen partnerships, support fundraising, and advance the Alliance’s mission.

The Communications Coordinator leads the day-to-day execution of the Alliance’s communications, including content creation, social media, website management, photography and video, campaigns, and event communications. The role proactively documents the Alliance’s work in the field, building a library of visual and multimedia content for ongoing and future storytelling. The position also works closely with the Development Coordinator on donor communications, fundraising campaigns, events, and sponsor recognition.

Job responsibilities: 

Communications Planning & Project Management

  • Serve as the primary communications partner to program teams, translating program priorities, milestones, and initiatives into effective communications and campaigns.
  • Develop communications plans and manage projects from concept to completion, including timelines, content development, coordination, and approvals.
  • Maintain the organization’s communications calendar and ensure coordinated, consistent messaging across programs, campaigns, and events.
  • Develop communications templates and messaging tools that strengthen brand consistency and support staff communications.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to elevate programs, partnerships, and organizational milestones through creative storytelling and communications.

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Create engaging written and visual content for the Alliance’s website, newsletters, email campaigns, annual reports, fundraising materials, social media, and other communications.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, community members, and partners to identify and develop stories that showcase the Alliance’s work and impact.
  • Translate program accomplishments, milestones, and community experiences into accessible, engaging stories for diverse audiences.
  • Proactively capture photos, video, B-roll, interviews, testimonials, and field footage across programs, events, and sites to document the Alliance’s work and build a library of content for current and future storytelling, campaigns, and video projects.
  • Produce and edit short-form video and multimedia content for social media, campaigns, events, and organizational storytelling.
  • Maintain an organized, accessible archive of photos, videos, B-roll, and other communications assets.

Digital Communications

  • Manage and update the Alliance’s website, ensuring content is current, engaging, and action-oriented.
  • Manage social media channels, including content planning, publishing, community engagement, and performance tracking.
  • Manage email marketing and digital campaigns that support organizational and fundraising goals.
  • Design graphics, presentations, and other branded materials using Canva or similar tools.
  • Monitor digital communications performance and use insights to strengthen engagement and content strategy.

Campaigns, Events & Development Communications

  • Develop and execute communications for organizational campaigns, fundraising initiatives, volunteer recruitment, and public engagement efforts across digital and print channels.
  • Partner with the Development Coordinator on donor communications, fundraising campaigns, events, and related development materials.
  • Coordinate communications before, during, and after organizational events, including promotion, on-site coverage, and post-event storytelling.

Partnerships & Brand Stewardship

  • Develop communications materials that support and elevate organizational partnerships, sponsors, funders, volunteers, and community engagement.
  • Coordinate partner and sponsor recognition across communications platforms and campaigns.
  • Support media outreach, press opportunities, and special communications projects as needed.
  • Maintain brand consistency across organizational communications and materials.
  • Coordinate with external designers, photographers, videographers, printers, and other communications vendors as needed.

 

Position Details:

  • Compensation: $33.00–$35.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Schedule: 21 hours per week, generally Monday through Wednesday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for programs and events.
  • Location: This is an in-person position based at Bronx River House, 1490 Sheridan Boulevard, Bronx, NY.
  • Reports to: Director of Development & Communications.
  • Benefits: Pre-tax transit benefits; sick time; and other benefits.

 

Required qualifications:

  • 2–4 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, content creation, or a related field.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with experience creating content for multiple audiences and platforms.
  • Experience managing social media, websites, and other digital communications channels.
  • Experience capturing high-quality photography and video, including B-roll and field footage, and producing and editing short-form video content.
  • Experience creating visual content using Canva or similar design tools.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, partners, volunteers, and community members.
  • Ability and willingness to regularly attend and document programs, events, and field activities throughout the Bronx, with occasional travel elsewhere in New York City and evening or weekend work as needed.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish or proficiency in another language spoken by Bronx communities strongly preferred.
  • Experience with communications platforms such as Mailchimp, Later, Asana, or similar tools.
  • Experience with WordPress or another content management system.
  • Experience with nonprofit, fundraising, or donor communications.
  • Familiarity with communications analytics and digital performance metrics.
  • Interest in conservation, parks, environmental education, environmental justice, or community-based nonprofit work.
